There Are Some Men

a poem by Leonard Cohen.
There are some men
who should have mountains
to bear their names to time.
Grave markers are not high enough or green, and sons go far away
to lose the fist
their father’s hand will always seem.
I had a friend:
he lived and died in mighty silence
and with dignity,
left no book son or lover to mourn.
Nor is this a mourning-song
but only a naming of this mountain
on which I walk,
fragrant, dark and softly white
under the pale of mist.
I name this mountain after him.

Now there’s a table between us
One by one we lay out our cards
You say you’ve got nothing to lose oh
But you’d have to judge me too harsh
Don’t you know that I’m rolling tomorrow
Wheels draggin’ and a rear-view mind
I will take all that you give to borrow
I will leave all that you can find
Now there’s a table between us
Pass the space but we don’t pass the line
You say you’re a work still in progress
I can tell you, you’re doing just fine
Don’t you know that I’m rolling tomorrow
Wheels draggin’ and a rear-view mind
I will take all that you give to borrow
I will leave all that you can find
Now there’s a table between us
Been a long night and a long day before
One more drink to the past and the future
I am weary but I’m wanting you more
Don’t you know that I’m rolling tomorrow
Wheels draggin’ and a rear-view mind
I will take all that you give to borrow
I will leave all that you can find
